Old Wives Tales that Make You More Beautiful

Try An Oatmeal Face Mask:

Oatmeal is for more than eating on a cool winter morning. It is said that an oatmeal honey mixture makes an excellent face mask. It is made by mixing oatmeal, honey and a little water to make the paste. Then, the paste is applied to a clean face and left on for up to 15 minutes. When removed, the skin is nice and soft thanks to the oatmeal’s exfoliating properties.

Use Cucumbers to Cure Puffy Eyes:

The ingredients for many products that reduce eye puffiness include extracts chemically related to cucumbers. In other words, putting cold cucumbers on the eyes to reduce puffiness around the eye is medically sound.

Moisturize, Moisturize:

Open pores are best to get moisturizer to soak into the skin. To open the pores, apply a hot washcloth to the face for a few minutes. The heat opens the pores and allows the skin to absorb the moisturizer. By the way, even if you feel you are moisturizing enough, go ahead and do it a little more. The skin needs moisture to look its best.  Also, drink lots of water to keep the skin moisturized from the inside out.

Use Toothpaste to Fight Pimples:

Toothpaste works to dry up the oil within a pimple, and it fights infection due to its antibacterial properties. Therefore, when dealing with a particularly oily pimple, try some toothpaste on the spot overnight and see if it doesn’t help dry it up.

Bleached Brows
Worn by the likes of Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, bleached brows are quickly become a staple on fashion runways and on the faces of many celebs. This trend involves bleaching the hairs to blend in with your natural skin tone to give the illusion that you have no eyebrows at all.

Au Naturel
Thick, ungroomed brows are once again crashing into the mainstream. This look is super easy to achieve (just do nothing), and can really make the eyes pop. The ideal of this trend is to create a “heavy” brow look that appears slightly unkempt.

Colored Brows
Bright, bold colors have remained popular in the fashion industry as of late, and now these gorgeous hues can be seen on eyebrows. Pastels are especially popular when dying eyebrows, giving the hairs a pop of brilliant candy-inspired shades.

Brow Extensions
Are your brows thin, patchy, or non-existent? Consider eyebrow extensions. Like lash extensions, small hair fibers are selected based on your hair or brow color and are glued into place. Eyebrow extensions are excellent for making brows appear fuller, longer, and shapelier.
If you’re interested in trying something new with your brows, consider one of these wild ideas. These out-of-the-ordinary eyebrow trends are sure to attraction attention whenever you go

Relax, it is Friday!

Relax! It's the weekend. When you're stressed, the body releases a surge of hormones, including cortisol. Cortisol triggers inflammation, which breaks down collagen-the protein that keeps skin firm, plump and smooth-resulting in thin skin, fine lines, and dryness. Listen to your favorite music, take a hike, get some good rest! All help reduce cortisol levels!

Maintaining Healthy Skin While Traveling

Pack a Beauty Bag
If possible, try to maintain your beauty routine by bringing along your daily skincare products. If you don’t want to bring a bunch of large bottles, pour small amounts of each into travel-size containers. Good products to have on hand while traveling include a hydrating cleanser, hand sanitizer, hand cream, moisturizer, and lip balm.
Hydrate the Night Before
The night before your set travel date, take the time to thoroughly hydrate your skin. Try a gentle facial scrub to get rid of dead skin cells, followed by a hydrating mask to moisturize the skin.
Slather on Sunscreen
Don’t leave the house without your sunscreen. If you’re going to be traveling, you’ll most likely be exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Opt for a standard sunscreen product, or wear a moisturizer with SPF.
Apply Oil to Avoid Moisture Loss
If you’re traveling via airplane, plan ahead to avoid your skin becoming too dry mid-flight. Pack a small container of facial oil in your carry-on bag, and apply it every couple of hours during your flight. Facial oil will help to penetrate the deeper layers of skin, which can help prevent rough, dry spots and acne from developing.
Drink Plenty of H20
As most people know, water has numerous health benefits, including better skin health. Be sure to keep your body well-hydrated during your flight by drinking water during your travels. Avoid alcohol which can actually contribute to dehydration. Remember that the warmer the weather, the more water you’ll need to drink due to moisture loss.
Traveling can be stressful on the skin, leading to problems such as dryness, rough patches, and acne. Fortunately, these side effects can typically be avoided with proper skin care.

A Dermatologist Favorite Things

Everybody has a list of their favorite things and so do dermatologists. Here’s a peek into dermatologists’ bag of goodies.
Likely, in the number one favorite of dermatologists is sunscreen. These board-certified medical specialists recognize the severe damage on skin from the sun’s rays. It’s the best weapon to defend the skin against Mother Nature. What level of SPF do dermatologists recommend? The answer is an SPF of 40+. Lather it on when you’re heading for the beach or pool and when you’re driving to work in the sun. Keep in mind that the winter sun can be just as dangerous as the summer sun. Wear sunscreen daily and year-round.
Dermatologists just love facial cleaners with glycerin and natural essential oils like jojoba. Glycerin is a deep agent that cleans the pores and ramps up cellular turnover. Other ingredients in facial soaps and liquid cleansers that dermatologists like to see include vitamin E, olive oil and glycolic acid.
As skin care specialists, dermatologists are strong advocates of effective anti-aging products. Skin care ingredients that top the list include retinol, marine antioxidants, argon oil and plant antioxidants. All of these ingredients have the science behind them for proven results.
And don’t forget about those natural skin care products. Dermatologists favor natural skin care products that work gently on the skin. For example, when treating age spots, your dermatologist will likely recommend a skin-lightening cream that contains vitamin E and aloe vera.
Dermatologists understand the science of skin and pick their favorite skin care ingredients wisely.

Why you need to Tone and Moisturize

The season of fall is upon us, and this is the time of year most of us start worrying about chapped lips, patchy elbows, and less-than-supple skin. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and obviously, the most visible. What your skin looks like reveals what you put into your body and how well you treat yourself. As fun as it is to play with bolder makeup looks and try different hair colors during the colder months, it never hurts to make sure your skin is well pampered. If anything, it is the first step in taking preventative measures against aging!

Areas to focus on
The best thing to do is to moisturize everywhere you tend to get dry, but ideally, you should moisturize your entire body. Some parts of your body are used to protecting itself against the environment and damaging factors, so the skin has over time developed to be thicker, like your palms, heels, elbows, and knees. That is why those areas tend to get cracked and drier than other areas of the skin. Those areas require more attention because quite simply, we use them the most. For these areas, be sure to use a highly hydrating and rich body butter.
For other areas like legs, arms, back, it’s best to go with something simple like a lotion, but if your skin tends to be overall more dry, go with body butter, especially during the colder season. Body butter just takes longer to sink into the skin.
For your face, use something that targets specific issues, whether it’s anti-aging, dryness, redness, uneven skin tone or acne. There are face moisturizers for virtually every known issue, and it’s up to you and your esthetician to find the right one for you!

The Facts and the Fiction about Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is pretty hot right now. People are cooking with it, eating it, and doing “oil pulling” with it. OK, we get it. It’s good for your health – but that’s on the inside. Did you know that this wonderful smelling oil is actually a natural beauty product?
Coconut Oil for Natural Beauty
Attractive young woman with coconut. Closeup. Isolated on white.
Moisturize your skin, deep condition your hair, shave your legs, remove your make up, and use it on your face for a healthy glow. What can’t coconut oil do?
Well, it is not a universal cure all. It is a wonderful moisturizer for your skin but some people still break out. True, it does have anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties, but some skin can’t take the oil. You don’t want to miss out though, so try some and see how it does for you.
How do you use Coconut Oil?
As a moisturizer, put it on your hands, feet, body, and even your face. It doesn’t take much so use just a dab. Keep a bottle by your bed, in the bathroom, and in the kitchen. Use it like hand lotion. You will find that it not only smoothes and moisturizes but also brightens your skin, giving it a healthy glow. When you want to deep condition your hair, coconut oil gets the job done beautifully. It penetrates the hair shaft better than other oils so you get deeper moisturizing. Put it on your hair as you would any other deep conditioner – except it is like nothing you have ever used before. You can even dab a little on dry hair to tame fly aways or frizzies.
Young woman washing her long hair under the shower standing with her back to the camera rinsing it off under the jet of water with her head partially turned to the side over grey mosaic tiles
What kind of Coconut Oil do you Use?
Look for organic extra virgin coconut oil. You want to make sure that is had not been processed in any way such as bleached, deodorized, hydrogenated, or refined. The main reason to go organic is to avoid getting a GMO food. Ick! You only want pure, natural, and untampered coconut oil on your skin and hair – and in your body too.
Moisturizing Coconut Oil Scrub

Make your own scrub by combining ½ cup of melted, organic, extra virgin coconut oil with 1 cup of either white sugar, salt, or brown sugar – or mix them up. Add your favorite scent by mixing in a few drops of pure vanilla or your favorite essential oil. Use it when you wash your hands and when you bathe for glowing, soft skin.

                  Power Player Skin Care Ingredients
While most skin care products have effective ingredients, there are some all-stars that really pack a punch with its powerful ingredients. Be on the lookout for these ingredients when you’re shopping for skin care products.
Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is known as “the eraser.” It’s the most effective ingredient for bleaching out sun spots, mottled skin and blotches according to dermatologists at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. How does it work? It fades hyperpigmentation by blocking the enzyme that causes melanin production. Just dab it on the dark spot.
Retinol
This vitamin-A derivative is a cure-all for sagging skin, dullness, fine lines and wrinkles. Associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine touts retinol as the best anti-aging ingredient. This derivative sweeps away dead skin cells, ramps up cell turnover and boosts collagen production. All around, it stimulates cellular repair at deep levels of the skin. Plus, it pumps up blood-vessel formation for healthier looking skin.
Antioxidants
Beautiful young woman with fruit mask on a face
Antioxidants in skin care products are the fixers. These ingredients include vitamin C, coffee berry, pomegranate and green tea. Antioxidants penetrate the skin and ward against harmful free radicals that damage collagen, elastin and DNA. They also help boost cell repair and fade blotches. Go with a serum for a strong dose and a skin care product that has a formula of multiple antioxidant. Antioxidants work better together.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids
Alpha hydroxyl acids like glycolic acid add radiance, fade blotches and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. Use peels with these acids to break the bonds between the skin and dead cells. Alpha hydroxyl acids also help other anti-aging ingredients to penetrate the skin more effectively. Just don’t overdo it. Twice a week effective for allowing the skin to recover during treatments. And follow the treatment up with a serum.

Beauty Trend: Dermaplaning, or shaving your face for women!!
Would you shave your face for beauty? That’s what the latest beauty craze, Dermaplaning, has bold women everywhere trying. Fans of the process claim it keeps their skin looking smoother and can reduce wrinkles. Read on to learn more.

Dermaplaning Benefits
When it comes to ways to reduce wrinkles, women have tried everything. Dermaplaning is based on the theory that men who shave their face to remove stubble develop fewer facial wrinkles than women, who don’t shave their face.
Laughing Beautiful Young Woman with Clean Fresh Skin close up over beige background. Beauty Portrait. Spa Woman Smiling and touching her skin. Perfect Fresh Skin. Model. Youth and Skin Care Concept
Contrary to popular belief, the hair you shave off does not grow back thicker or darker. Facial hairs cannot get thicker or darker; they’re naturally soft and silky. Think of dermaplaning as providing a deeper exfoliation than you would get from your grain scrub or AHA exfoliator.
Fans also claim that dermaplaning removes the baby hairs on your face, which allows your beauty products to sink in deeper and faster. Your makeup will also go on smoother.
If you give this a try once, you might become the latest fan of dermaplaning. The beauty trend has already claimed such converts as The Bachelor’s Michelle Money and Real Housewives’ Alex McCord.

What You’ll Need
If you want to give this beauty trend a try, pick up a facial or eyebrow razor, which can be used on the face “dry” or without the aid of shaving cream.  It’s important that you not use a generic shaving razor, which requires shaving cream and can irritate dry skin. Shave the skin on your face, taking care to avoid the eye area. Watch this helpful video before you give dermaplaning a try.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UArJYGj9no

5 Beauty Banes & How to Deal

There are the occasional blemishes and then there are the beauty banes that drive you to distraction and make you want to hide out in your home with your head covered until it goes away. These five maladies are survivable; all you need is a little know how.

Cystic Acne
First, picking at cystic acne will only make it more inflamed, swollen, and painful. It can also lead to infection. Dermatologists typically approach this problem one of two ways: with oral medication like Acutane or topical medications that contain retinol, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. You can get relief from pain and swelling by alternating warm and cold compresses on the area.

Sty on Eye
Young woman examining eye in mirror
A sty is a tiny bump on the eye lid. It usually has a small white head which almost makes it look like a pimple. It is important that you do not puncture or squeeze the sty, especially since it is so close to your eye – you could damage it. There are some over the counter topical solutions that you can apply and they can work quite well. There are home treatments you can do as well. Apply warm compresses to the eye for about 15 minutes 4 to 6 times a day. This helps the sty drain. You can also use a gentle, nonirritating soap and tap water solution to scrub the area gently.

Fever Blisters
Fever blisters, or cold sores, can crop up unexpectedly and mar your whole look. They tend to pop and the clear fluid will leak out. Then it will crust over and begin to heal. In some cases a fever blister is gone in a few days, but can stick around as long as two weeks. There are over the counter topical treatments that may lessen the life of a fever blister. In some cases, if caught early (before the sore appears) certain anti-viral oral medications work. Raw, unfiltered, local honey has anti-viral properties. When you first notice a fever blister coming on, dab some on the area. Keep reapplying the honey as it wears off. This home treatment for fever blisters works fairly quickly.
Woman covering mouth

Skin Tags
Skin tags are soft, small skin growths. They are harmless, but they can appear on the face, neck, and other parts of the body. Some people find this undesirable as they can cause a cosmetic problem. A doctor can remove skin tags through several very simple procedures. After injecting the area with a local anesthetic, the doctor will cut or tie the skin tag to remove it. Freezing the tag, much the way that warts are removed, is another method to get rid of skin tags.

Age or Liver Spots
Age spots are flat areas of the skin that have increased pigmentation. They may range from tan to black and can be very small to rather large. They can appear on the hands, face, arms, chest, and shoulders. While young people can get liver spots, they typically appear in older adults, starting in their fifties. Staying out of the sun is the best way to prevent age spots. If you do have them there are products that will bleach your skin that are available from your esthetician. A dermatologist can also remove them in his office.
You don’t have to live with these beauty banes. Whether you choose a home treatment, see your esthetician or doctor, you can be rid of them and uncover the beautiful you again.

Understanding Skin Damage and Treatments
Free Radicals

Every day we are exposed to the elements - stress, pollution, toxins, and most importantly, sunlight.  These are known as free radicals, and they are the root of skin damage and aging.  Free radicals destroy the chemical makeup of our skin cells, preventing them from functioning properly, causing our skin to deteriorate.

UV rays are classified as UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays), and both are major concerns for skin health.  UVA rays have the same damaging effects all day long, all year round.  They penetrate the layers of your skin causing damage deep beneath the surface, UVB rays result in surface burns which can lead to discoloration and uneven skin tone.

Defense and Antioxidants

The most natural defense against free radical damage is antioxidants - they neutralize free radicals, restoring and protecting skin from damage.  Antioxidants can be found in vitamins like A and E, or in plant extracts like white tea, rosemary, and horse chestnut seed.  Antioxidants are vital in the pursuit for healthy skin.

17 Foods To Eat For A Summer Glow If You're More Into Dark Chocolate And Berries Than Tanning Beds

Summer is on the horizon, which means you’ll probably want to start working on getting your tan on to get that certain kinda glow everyone wants this time of year. Of course, tanning isn’t the only way to create a summer shine, and if you’ve been on the lookout for foods for glowing skin, I’ve got your back.
I have found that my diet almost always dictates how good my skin looks, so if I want to clear up some acne or even out my skin tone, I reach for fresh, unprocessed foods instead of stocking up on more skincare items. It doesn’t matter how many products I use or how diligently I wash my face — if I’ve been eating more processed food, then my skin reflects it. Science also agrees with me on this, as many doctors and dermatologists have said that your skin reflects what you’re eating. Shocker of the century: What you put inside of your body has an effect on how your body looks.
As a general rule then, eating what we definitely know to be healthier foods, getting enough fruits and vegetables, and staying away from ready meals or high fructose corn syrup are good options for taking care of your skin. But getting into specifics, here are 17 foods to eat if you want to achieve a shimmery summer glow.
